Minnesota family advocacy groups, including the Legal Services Advocacy Project (LSAP), are calling for a state-level stimulus payment for families that are struggling due to the pandemic. For various reasons, many have still not received federal stimulus payments, are not receiving unemployment, and face other obstacles to stability.
Jessica Webster, staff attorney with LSAP said, for example, “We have a parent who's a single dad, who has one child but is also the guardian of his younger brother, who lost work at a grocery store and hasn't had any income since then. And COVID is really hurting those employment prospects."
The Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP), which provides cash payments to qualified families, is often the only source of income. Advocacy groups hope the state can improve MFIP this year and make a difference to the nearly sixty thousand children living in poverty in Minnesota.
