Conference Safety Protocols: A Letter From State Support

Dear Community:

State Support would like to provide some background and clarity around our COVID-19 protocols for the upcoming Statewide Conference.

First, some context. We developed these policies, and continue to revisit them, with an eye toward upholding one of our core values – one we believe is shared by the broader legal services community: we must always strive to respect and prioritize the most vulnerable among us.

With that core value grounding our decision-making process, we have developed policies that we hope will create an environment where the most vulnerable people have the highest level of protection that we can provide. While we understand there will always be risks involved in a gathering of this nature, for primary conference components such as plenaries and break-out sessions, and other aspects that are within our control, we’ve attempted to provide as much safety as possible. To that end:

  • We require full vaccination. You are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after your second dose of a Pfizer, Moderna, or Novavax vaccine, or two weeks after a single dose of the J&J vaccine. For those who cannot be vaccinated, we are honoring exemptions provided by your organization.

  • We require attendees to test 3 days or less before arriving at the conference. Any type of CDC-approved test is acceptable, including rapid at-home tests. Minnesota offers every household up to 12 free rapid at-home tests: https://mn.gov/covid19/get-tested/at-home/

  • We require attendees to wear masks in session rooms and near the registration desk. We will have masks available for attendees.

We know that much of the country is moving away from having any COVID protocols. However, just as State Support has invested in making sure LawHelpMN is accessible, we are invested in making this conference as accessible as possible. As much as we would like to throw all precautions out the window, we know that doing so would exclude many people within our community who remain vulnerable to severe illness from COVID-19, even at this stage in the pandemic. Knowing that, we have made the intentional decision to keep our policies in place, out of respect and concern for these individuals and their families.

We have all been through so much in the three years since the last Statewide Conference. Legal services staff have been on the frontlines, always fighting for justice even while enduring so much upheaval themselves. We are so excited to have our community come together in-person again and while it may not be ideal, we hope this conference can be a space where everyone feels as comfortable as possible, and we can celebrate all that our community has accomplished.

Sincerely,

State Support’s Conference Staff

NAMI to Present Conference Plenary on Mental Health in the Workplace

This fall’s Legal Services Statewide Conference will offer attendees a focus on mental health and legal practice as they gather with colleagues to reconnect, learn, and earn CLE credit. On Friday morning, November 4th, conference participants can attend two sessions presented by Kay King, community educator with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Minnesota).

NAMI Minnesota is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. For over 40 years, NAMI Minnesota has worked to promote the development of community mental health programs and services, change public attitudes about mental illnesses, improve access to services and increase opportunities for recovery.

In King’s plenary for the legal services community, attendees will learn the five things they can do to create a workplace that values good mental health. Participants will learn how to promote good mental health (including dealing with stress), the common symptoms of a mental illness, how attitudes and language impact people with mental illnesses, and accommodations for a mental illness. King will also present a breakout session on mental health “first aid” prior to the plenary.

Sharon Browning, Esq. to Present Plenary at Statewide Conference

Legal Services State Support is pleased to announce that Sharon Browning, Esq. of JUST Listening will address attendees in a morning plenary at this year’s Statewide Conference. Browning is an attorney, former executive director of Philadelphia VIP, the hub of pro bono legal services in Philadelphia, and an educator in the sociology department at Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia. She is a trained mediator, as well as a retreat facilitator, trained spiritual guide, and motivator. Browning coordinates JUST Listening, a social enterprise fostering personal and social change and transformation through the practice and teaching of mindful listening and communication skills. The work of JUST Listening is twofold: the facilitation of training workshops, retreats, and ‘difficult’ conversations, focusing primarily on those working with marginalized individuals and groups, and the training for and supervision of Listening projects in which volunteers JUST Listen to people on the social margins.

In her plenary for the legal services community, Browning will discuss the transformational power of non-egoic communication and the role of integrative listening in the work setting. She will describe non-
egoic listening techniques and how they can be applied in legal settings to improve staff cohesion, morale, productivity, and wellness, as well as enhanced relationships and increased efficacy for clients.

Browning will also present two one-hour break-out sessions designed to develop advanced communication skills for conference attendees who wish to delve deeper. Listen to Browning’s recent podcast “Listening: An Act of Love.”

JUST Listening clients include the American Bar Association, State Bar of Wisconsin, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, the American Association of Physician Liaisons, National Nursing Centers Consortium, City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health and many more.

Bringing Wellness Into Focus for the Civil Legal Aid Community

This month Legal Services State Support convened the first Minnesota Legal Aid Wellness (M-LAW) Committee meeting. The Committee was created to provide resources and support focusing on mental and physical health for the civil legal aid program community. Although the work of civil legal aid can be extremely fulfilling and satisfying, it is also challenging due to the volume of work, high conflict cases, clients in crisis, and exposure to trauma.  Addressing the well-being of all staff is critical if we are to provide quality legal services to our clients.

The M-LAW committee is comprised of volunteer staff from the programs of the Minnesota Legal Services Coalition and its Partner organizations.  Committee volunteers include non-attorney staff as well as attorneys, intake, and administrative staff. M-LAW has created five sub-committees to help plan and generate ideas for a particular wellness area.  Current sub-committees include:

  • Wellness trainings (developing ideas for trainings, researching potential trainers, etc.)

  • Best practices for organizations (developing ideas/policies for organizations to implement wellness resources and support within their own organizations)

  • Social and well-being activities (creating and organizing different groups that allow the legal aid community to socialize with one another)

  • Affinity groups (spaces for people with shared identities to gather like LGBTQ and BIPOC staffs, parents of toddlers, etc.)

  • Restorative circles (opportunity to connect with one another, share how we are feeling, show support to each other)

If you are interested in joining one of the sub-committees, or the larger M-LAW Committee, please email Aimee Falbo at State Support: afalbo@mnlegalservices.org. The M-LAW Committee will continue to meet monthly to discuss and implement sub-committee initiatives.  To ensure the Committee is addressing the needs of the community, a survey will be sent to civil legal aid and community partner programs requesting feedback and suggestions for services, trainings, and support to best help staff wellness.
